Free shipping for wine — what could be better?

I have ordered plenty of wine over the internet and from out-of-state wineries. It is really great to be able to buy some of the wines that do not make it all the way to Austin on their own. There is one drawback, however — shipping costs!

For an inexpensive bottle, the shipping cost can easily be more than the wine. So you have to order a wine that costs enough to justify the shipping. This is one reason that less than 10% of internet wine sales are for wines that cost less than $19 a bottle.

But there have to be some good shipping deals out there. How do you find them?

A great place to look is freewineshipping.com. This site finds great deals on wine shipping and tells you about them in weekly posts. A recent great deal discussed on their site is the Wine of the Day offered at free.winelibrary.com. Gary Vaynerchuk is selling one different wine each day with free shipping! What a great deal. You can try lots of inexpensive wines without ever leaving your house.

The only trouble with this deal is that I will not be able to use it during the summer, because it gets too hot to ship wine in Austin. In the meantime, cheers to the folks at freewineshipping.com.
