Gifts (and snark) for wine lovers on Valentine’s Day

Now is the time that I am supposed to write a post about pairing chocolate and wine or what champagne goes with flavored massage oil, but I just don’t feel like it. Valentine’s Day is designed to get you to feel bad unless you spend lots of money on your significant other.

My wife and I usually spend the evening with a few friends. We love spending time alone, but doing it on command seems contrived. Our Valentine’s Day dinners are always a lot of fun. The food is good, we drink good wine, and nobody eats alone on the day that being alone means “loser”. Besides, we find that people who are not pretending to enjoy one another are a lot more fun.

The wine our friends bring tells you a lot about how they are feeling. The happily separated guests bring Champagne or good Burgundies to celebrate the fact that their “F’ing ex” is not with them. Guests that are still stinging from their last relationship might bring wine with a more telling name such as Royal Bitch Grenache or Pure Evil Chardonnay. The best wines are brought by recently divorced guests that got part of the cellar in their divorce settlement, because they want to drink the stuff their ex wanted to save.

Planning a Valentine’s Day party is relatively easy. Pick a meal that is not lots of work — you want the evening to be about hanging with your friends not fretting over dinner. It has been our experience that complicated meals are generally not appreciated by this group, but something to soak up the wine is a good idea. Also, be sure to have plenty of wine on hand, some friends may find that they would like more than just one glass on this “special night”. And finally, be sure to let everyone know as soon as you can, nobody wants to be someone’s last choice for Valentine’s Day.

If on the other hand, you are planning to exchanging gifts with a partner or friend, there are a few things you should consider. First, the name of the gift is significant. For example, wine.com’s gift list for Valentine’s Day starts with a gift called “Trophy Reds”. I would suggest never giving your lover a gift with the word trophy in it. If you want the name to express an emotion try Beaujolais Cru Saint-Amour which translates as “Saint Love”.

Champagne is another nice gift for Valentine’s Day, but most popular non-vintage cuvees will set you back around $40. If you like bubbles for your celebration you might consider Ariston Fils Carte Blanche Brut Champagne which sells for about $25 or a Prosecco such as Loredan Gasparini Prosecco which is about $15. Both of these bottles offer all the joy of a sparkling wine and still leave you some money to buy dinner.

Whatever your plans are, WineEnabler.com would like to wish you a happy Valentine’s Day.
