Stone House Vineyards 2005 Claros

This 100% Norton wine made by Angela Moench at Stone House Vineyards is an example of what Texas wine hopes to be someday. This excellent red wine is made from the Norton grape, often referred to as America’s varietal. Texas growers are beginning to plant Norton grapes because of their resistance to Pierce’s disease, but all I know about it is that Angel turns it into good wine. The nose of the ‘05 Claros is full of current, spice, plum, and mocha. With a little air time, the wine began to show a mouth of spicy cherry. The tannins are very fine grained and lead to a long finish. The wine is soft enough to pair with grilled pork, but it is big enough to drink with peppered steak. ($21-23)
