Bold

WineEnabler.com’s Wine 101 style term for full bodied wines that are defined by their sheer size. Bold wines are highly extracted with deep, dark color. Frequently, Bold wines are opaque. The extraction process also pulls lots of tannin from the grape skins and pips into the wine, giving the Bold wine more body, texture, and tannin. The aroma profile for Bold wines depends on the primary grape used. For Cabernet Sauvignons and their blends, common smells are cassis, blackberry, vanilla (from the oak), spice, and cigar box/smoke/tobacco. The aroma profile for Bold wines derived by Syrah/Shiraz is similar, but with a greater emphasis on spice and black pepper. The flavor profile for Bold wines includes dark fruit such as black cherries, blackberries, cassis, and licorice. The finish for a Bold wine is typically very long.
