AVA

The abbreviation for American Viticulture Area. An AVA is a wine grape growing region that is geographically distinguishable from its surroundings. AVAs are defined by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, which is a part of the United States Department of the Treasury.

Auslese

A German word that translates as “selection”. As applied to wines, it refers to hand selected grapes. Auslese is one of 6 categories defined in Germany’s highest wine control laws. Auslese wines have between 20 and 25% residual sugar.

Austere
