- (1) The god of wine in classical mythology, also called Dionysus.
(2) The name of a white wine grape. The Bacchus grape is typically the blended with the Müller-Thurgau grape.

- A wine tasting term that refers to the relative importance of the acid, alcohol, tannins, and fruit in a wine. A balanced wine does not emphasize any of these factors over the others.

- A wine bottle that will hold 12 liters of wine or 16 standard bottles.

- Barbaresco is the name of a town in one of Italy’s most famous wine growing regions, Barbaresco DOCG. Wines with this designation are made exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape.

- Barbera is the name of an Italian red wine grape. The name is contained in the DOCG name for three regions in Italy: (1) Barbera d’ Alba and (2) Barbera d Asti, which make wines from 100% Barbera, and (3) Barbera del Monferrato, were the Barbera grape may be blended.

- A wooden container used to age, store, ferment, and sometimes transport wine. Typically made from either American or French oak, barrels may also be made from Hungarian oak or cherry. Barrique, hogsheads, and puncheons are some of the names given to barrels used in winemaking.

- A 225 liter wood barrel used to store and age wine in Burgundy in France.

- A measure of the sugar concentration in juice or must.

- A winemaking region in Burgundy that starts just north of the town of Lyon. Wines from Beaujolais feature the Gamay grape.

- A red wine made from the Gamay grape that is fermented for just a few weeks before being released on third Thursday of November.
